Kidical Mass Ride Guildford – Sunday 24th September 2023

Kidical Mass Guildford’s next ride is organised for Sunday 24th September to coincide with the international Kidical Mass weekend (23rd to 24th September) and Guildford’s Car Free Day. These rides are organised to demonstrate the need and demand for better cycling infrastructure so children can cycle safely.

A slow-paced, marshalled community bike ride designed for riders of all ages and all abilities (children must be accompanied by a grown-up).

The ride will start on the green by G Live at 10.45am and end at Allen House Grounds. The route is around 2.3 miles long so perfect for little legs. The council are providing additional bike parking at the Allen House tennis courts for Car Free Day should you then wish to walk into town.

Kidical Feeder rides

Some roads are closed due to Car Free Day. To help you navigate to the start of the Kidical Mass Guildford ride and avoid the road closures, we suggest the following feeder cycle routes from the four Park & Rides and Shalford. The feeder rides will be led, departing at 10am, or you can self-guide.

Map showing which roads are closed in Guildford for car free day; High street, Upper High street, Jeffries Passage, Market Street, Angel Gate, Swan Lane, The Shambles, Chapel Street, Tunsgate.
Roads closed on Car Free Day
  • Spectrum Park & Ride, 1 mile long, 66ft ascent. https://www.plotaroute.com/route/2367301
Up through Stoke Park and using pavements, suitable for all.
Start by the ramp up to the Spectrum entrance, use the controlled crossing over A25 into Stoke Park and into Nightingale Road. At London Road use the pavement to the controlled crossing or continue along the pavement to the G Live green.
  • Onslow Park & Ride 2.8 miles long, 102ft ascent https://www.plotaroute.com/route/2348098
Start at Onslow Park & Ride, via Banister’s Field/Tesco, through the University grounds, past the Odeon to Allen House and G Live green. Join in at Tesco, the University or the Odeon to the Kidical meetup point on the G Live green.
Onslow P&R via River Wey path 3.3 miles long 112ft ascent https://www.plotaroute.com/route/2367222
This route runs next to the river and is more enjoyable but less safe for young ones than above.
  • Artington Park & Ride 2.4 miles long, 112ft ascent https://www.plotaroute.com/route/2348038
This route is not suitable for cargo bikes due to the steps and sand bank, and caution is required with children as there are no barriers next to the river.  This riverside route is best suited to mountain bikes or gravel bikes.  The town weir bridge is broken, so you will need to use a steep bridge with a gutter for bike wheels.  After all those warnings, it is a nice riverside route into Guildford and the Kidical meetup point on the G Live green.
  • Merrow Park & Ride 2.4 miles long, 72ft ascent https://www.plotaroute.com/route/2348090
This route is not really ideal for children. The route is along Epsom Road which has a marked cycle lane on the main road to the G Live green.
Alternative routes do not really exist and are much longer. Kidical and GBUG are campaigning for safer routes!
  • Shalford 2.6 miles long, 135ft ascent https://www.plotaroute.com/route/2383334
