The aim of the Guildford Sustainable Movement Corridors (SMC) is to provide rapid, priority pathways for pedestrians, cyclists and buses in the Guildford urban area. The planned SMC shown in the image below will link up:
- Guildford town centre and rail station
- Ladymead Retail Park
- Royal Surrey County Hospital
- University of Surrey’s Stag Hill and Manor Park campuses
- Surrey Research Park
- Slyfield Industrial Estate
- Existing urban communities in seven wards
- New rail stations at Guildford West (Park Barn) and Guildford East (Merrow)
- Park and Ride at Onslow and new Gosden Hill Farm facility
- The new communities at Blackwell Farm, Slyfield and Gosden Hill Farm

Parts of the SMC have been completed:
- SMC1 West: from Surrey Research Park to Guildford station. Phase 2b remains outstanding.
- SMC3 Town Centre Phase 1: Walnut Tree Close one-way traffic restriction
- SMC4 Town Centre Phase 2: Replacement Walnut Bridge complete. (Pedestrian and cycling route through Jewsons outstanding). A25 shared-use pedestrian/cycle facility complete however these could be further improved in line with current cycling infrastructure guidance.

GBUG strives to work with Guildford’s elected representatives and officers, ensuring they deliver the SMC as completely and as quickly as possible. For example, GBUG has pushed for improvements in proposed new layouts of the Stoke Rd/A25 crossroads; a junction along the SMC route that currently acts as a real barrier to North-South cycle journeys in Guildford.
For an update on progress with SMC1 West see Guildford Borough Council’s SMC page.
