Many commuters and other travellers cycle to Guildford main line station. This is not an easy journey because the town centre is divided from the station by the busy and dangerous gyratory. Cyclists must either take their life in their hands and cycle round the gyratory roads, or walk their bike up on the pavement up Bridge Street, which is very crowded. The recently replaced Walnut Bridge is planned to provide the main route for pedestrians and cyclists, but the Council has not yet identified a route for cyclists between the bridge and the town centre. However, GBUG members have identified, and for some time used, an ‘unofficial’ route which is motor traffic-free using the pavement around the inside of the gyratory and the subway to the station. We are campaigning to have this route made official, which we believe could be achieved for very little expenditure. Watch our video presentation of this route.
