Godalming Cycle Campaign came up with the idea to provide a surfaced, all-weather cycle route from Guildford to Godalming. GBUG joined with Godalming Cycle Campaign in pushing for the creation of the greenway. The vision is for the route to be off-road or segregated from traffic as much as possible. Such a route would allow cyclists of all abilities to travel between Guildford and Godalming, thus reducing traffic, pollution and providing health benefits. Guildford Borough Council have taken this idea on board and have integrated the Guildford-Godalming Greenway into their plans (old website Guildford-Godalming Greenway). Part of this route includes the surfacing of Dagley Lane to allow all-weather cycling between Shalford and Guildford without using the main road, and this is partially complete. The full route can be seen below.

Update August 2021: The Greenway concept has been endorsed by the Councils involved: GBC, SCC, Waverley, Godalming.

Update Summer 2022: The Dagley Lane resurfacing of the Bridleway is complete with funding obtained as part of the EATF Tranche 2. The surface is a bound, all-weather surface to allow all-weather cycling between Shalford and Guildford without using the main road. The path between the bridleway and Shalford Thames Water Depot will be upgraded soon.

Update August 2024: Funding has been awarded by Active Travel England to construct Phase 1 of the scheme. Local contribution funding has also been allocated to the scheme. The construction programme for Phase 1 is currently being planned with construction due to commence from 2025. Phase 1 includes the below:

  • Crossing improvements including new signalised crossings on the A3100 (between Mill Lane and Catteshall Road) and New Pond Road.
  • Widening and extension of the substandard shared footway/cycleway along western side of the A3100 between New Pond Road and Catteshall Road. The southernmost section leading to Catteshall Road includes segregated cycle tracks on both sides of the A3100.
  • Improvements to the substandard shared footway/cycleway along New Pond Road between the A3100 and Summers Road.
  • Improvements on Summers Road, which provides a direct route to Broadwater School, including footway improvements for pedestrians and a signed on-carriageway cycle route. A 20mph speed limit is proposed.
  • A new bound path for pedestrians and cyclists through Broadwater Park to connect Farncombe with the main route along the A3100.
  • A signed on-carriageway cycle route along Catteshall Road and Catteshall Lane. To also include footway improvements for pedestrians and a proposed 20mph speed limit.
  • A signed on-carriageway cycle route along Oakdene Road. A 20mph speed limit is proposed.

Update November 2024: GBUG is being consulted as a stakeholder on the proposed signalised crossings and raised tables. Have your say here before 13th December 2024.
