GBUG is being consulted on Guildford Town Centre Transport Package, a joint initiative by Guildford Borough Council (GBC) and Surrey County Council (SCC), whose schemes include:

  • Experimental one-way closure of Walnut Tree Close to reduce the volume of motor traffic and encouraging walking and cycling and reducing severance for communities in North Guildford (March 2023: Surrey County Council have made the decision to make the trial permanent.)
  • Replacing the present Walnut Bridge, with a wider, more visible structure which caters for both pedestrians and cyclists (2022: Bridge complete)
  • The College Link+, a new pedestrian and cycle route, linking Guildford Station via the new Walnut Bridge to Guildford College, see map below. (August 2021: partially complete: awaits approval by Secretary of State for conversion of footpath between Mary Road and William Road to allow cycling)

  • Improvement to traffic lights at Millbrook Car Park to reduce the volume of traffic entering the gyratory system (now complete)
  • Extending and enhancing A25 cycle corridor (August 2019: a segregated cycle path has been installed alongside Stoke Park; pavement outside Wickes is being widened; August 2024: improvements have started to the north side of the A25 Ladymead include widening the footway and introducing signalised toucan crossing facilities over the vehicle entrance/exit to Ladymead Retail Centre to overcome the gap in the existing shared pedestrian and cycling route along the A25).
  • Layout of A25/A320 Stoke cross roads will be improved for pedestrians and cyclists and give buses priority (August 2019: complete; August 2021: traffic lights have long delays for cyclists and pedestrians, timing may be improved as part of Weyside Urban Village Development, along with improvements to the approaches along the Woking Road)
  • Off-road shared path for pedestrians and cyclists on London Road (August 2019: plans being developed; August 2021: design from Boxgrove Roundabout to York Road has progressed, still needs to be agreed from High School down to York Road; funding obtained from Active Travel Fund to extend the scheme to Burpham 2023: Scheme delayed, public consultation expected late 2023)

The package is being delivered in stages, and GBUG aims to be involved at each of those stages.
