Cycling Routes and Improvements – Please Keep Your Suggestions Coming!

Surrey County Council is developing a Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) for Guildford Borough to help determine where best to prioritise improvements. G-BUG, Guildford Borough Council and others are actively working with Surrey County Council’s contractor Atkins to produce a 10+ year prioritised programme of infrastructure schemes that require investment, so that when funding becomes available the councils immediately know what to spend it on. The group met with Atkins on 18th July and 3rd August 2023.

Don’t sit on the side, you too can contribute and influence the plans:
Pinpoint your suggestions on their interactive map here.

If you have suggestions for whole new routes, add them to plotaroute.com (its free to sign up). Name the route “G-LCWIP Suggestion A to B”, include your rationale and expected use in the route “About” box. Email to info@g-bug.org,  G-BUG will collate the routes, send them to Surrey County Council and discuss the routes with them at our next meeting. Your suggestion could follow in the tracks of the Guildford to Godalming Greenway which was suggested and planned by cyclists and is now being implemented.

Guildford’s LCWIP will focus on everyday commuting journeys e.g. to work, schools, the shops, visiting friends or family, and to railway stations. It is not for leisure routes.

The LCWIP is following a defined process to get an idea of where to best place additional walk and cycle infrastructure.  On 10th Aug 2023 at Guildford Borough Council offices, Millmead, the team presented the academic analysis of census, previous cycle studies, existing roads, restrictions, and other data to G-BUG and others.

Suggested route: Farncombe to Compton
Suggested route: Aldershot – Guildford – Cobham
Suggested route: Woking – Guildford – Godalming

Far too many of the suggested routes were following busy roads and G-BUG stated that all-weather direct tracks away from busy roads is required.  We have until April to supply our comments before the second stage: Feasibility and Funding of the selected routes and improvements, and this is expected to take place in summer 2024 to Spring 2025.

The Guildford LCWIP team requested suggestions, so let’s have them!

So far, the following suggestions have been received by G-BUG and accepted by Guildford’s LCWIP into their study:

General comments on blogs, WhatApp etc, are hard to manage, so please put your considered suggestion for routes or point fixes into the interactive map and plotaroute.com .
